La Xbox de Microsoft est
une console de jeux vidéo sortie aux États-Unis le 15 novembre 2001. Microsoft fait avec elle ses
premiers pas dans ce secteur hautement concurrentiel, après avoir collaboré avec
Sega pour porter Windows CE sur
Dreamcast.
Une différence majeure avec un PC est qu'une Xbox ne peut à l'origine
exécuter que des programmes provenant d'un médium au format
propriétaire Microsoft. Ce
format n'est lisible que par le lecteur DVD de
la Xbox. À noter que cette limitation a pu être dépassée par un étudiant du MIT, qui en a expliqué le
principe dans le cadre d'une publication.
D'abord annoncée comme une console consacrée entièrement au jeu vidéo, Microsoft cherche à étendre le domaine de la Xbox
vers une station multimédia interactive en ligne. Microsoft, ce faisant, veut
offrir une première idée de la télé
interactive, ou iTV.
En 2005, la Xbox 360 lui
succéda.
